iRacing For A Noob

I’ve played iRacing for exactly one month as of writing this and here is my progress and opinion so far.

iRacing Progress

So I’ve been trying to get as much Sim Racing in as I could during the week and it has been a struggle. If you have a couple of free hours a day to race with then this will be for you. But, if you are like me with a one-year-old and a full-time career then it is going to be a struggle to play many races.

In the first week, I managed one race per day, unfortunately, I had to play a mix of racing disciplines. As there are four discipline licenses I didn’t make much progress in getting out of the rookies, see below for my stats so far:

iRacing Mini Review

iRacing can be a very expensive hobby, even if you take advantage of the new player subscriptions. I’m currently paying £10 a month to play and that only includes the base content. Once you are promoted to the next license you will need to start buying tracks and cars which further increases the cost.

Before you can even get racing you will need a decent PC (I spent around £500 for mine), and a steering wheel with pedals. You can reduce the price by going secondhand. I recommend either going for a Thrustmaster or Logitech at the budget price point.

Once you get past the pricey part, it is loads of fun, the rating system makes sure that the majority of other racers are not overtly aggressive and contact is reduced, which compared to other racers is a great addition. You also get a better sense of accomplishment when you win or even finish a race. I can’t wait to get out of the Rookies even though I’m not the fastest driver.

Will I Continue?

I’m not entirely sure, my renewal is coming up fast and I’m not 100% sure I’m making the most of it at the current time. Even if I don’t I will be coming back to it later on.

Anyway, that’s enough for this update, my next post will be another review. But if you want to see different content let me know.
